Story
of Stuff
Indirection:
The story of stuff by Annie Leonard ( Story of Stuff,2007) a
video show us a presentation about stuff where it comes from and how it is
consumed. which has five steps extraction, production, distraction, consumption and disposal . Truth in the factory
system is very
dangerous to society and to people's attention
and emphasis on
plants and in
particular the people who work in factories. its about how thing made in the world by
some people who will get benefit .
Extraction:
Extraction is the process of getting raw material
from earth. And for people to extract such material from earth they need to dig
deep into the ground and blow up mounts to get the raw material buried deep
inside creating manmade caves and holes. All that has a significant result on
our ecological system that by time can cause the extinction of many species
around the world. Moreover, in this process many people died in the past and
still people face death everyday they spend digging for raw materials. “ Mining,
for example, accounts for only 0.4% of the global workforce, but is responsible
for over 3% of fatal accidents at work—about 11,000 per year, about 30 each day
”(Story of stuff, 2007).
Production:
Production is the process of creating or turning raw
material into products that can be traded in markets all around the world. Most
production steps include mixture of chemicals, which can create dangerous
hazards on people and the environment. For example, increasing the green house
effect in the world, and water pollution that may cause in marine life
extinction, waste and toxic pollution that can be very harmful if not disposed
properly. “ In
the U.S, industry admits to releasing over 4 billion pounds of toxic chemicals
a year, pollution which disproportionately impacts low income communities and
communities of color ” (story of stuff, 2007) Departments,
factories must protect
workers from harmful substances that will
affect the future health .
Distribution:
Moreover, distribution is the spreading of thing and in this
case it is spreading of product to other places, markets and shops around the
world that made the contract with another company to have their products
distributed to them. Distribution is not an easy step because it is very costly
if the product must be shipped to other countries and also not all countries
allow any product in. Also, the products are old in a cheap price to attract
the consumers but this doesn’t pay the workers that worked hard and paid with
their health and time and effort which seems unfair.
Consumption:
Consumption is the process of consumers using a
product. For companies to maintain profit they need to encourage consumer to
consume more products to benefit the company in return. Companies spend
millions every year in advertising and creating better products every year.
However, the advertising process wastes a lot of money if eliminated it could
improve the efficiency of factories making them improve better utilities to
extract more material safely and save both man and environment.
Disposal:
Disposal is the process of getting rid of unwanted
material. People build large fires to burn down unwanted material; that causes
carbon dioxide to build up in our planet resulting in the loose of ozone thus
creates a larger problem. Moreover, toxic or radioactive material needs to be
contained and buried securely underground. If disposed incorrectly, radioactive
and toxic material can seep out and affect living things around and also can
pollute water resources and crops consumed by both humans and animals.
Consumption
in the UAE:
The UAE is a wealthy country that imports all kinds
of products and has many consumers creating a perfect market for many
companies. However. They lack the knowledge of recycling causing many unwanted
product to be thrown away and wasted by not re-producing them again. “The UAE's
coffee consumption rate puts it above Britain, where the average person drinks
slightly more than 3kg a year, but behind the US (4.17kg), Italy (5.98kg),
Brazil (5.6kg) and Germany, the world's biggest coffee consumer at 6.97kg per
person per year” (Tahira, 2009).
Conclusion:
People need to improve betters ways of extracting
material and put our planet as the first priority. If not people could loose
life and our planet could loose the ability to renew causing a mass extinction
on the planet. Moreover, people need to learn how to recycle and start
recycling material to cut down the numbers of green house affect and consume
the material more efficiently.
